Cullyd

I am a married woman with a husband, three grown up children, nine Grandchildren and three Great-grandchildren.
We all love the great outdoors, birds, animals, beautiful scenery, walking and taking photos wherever and whenever we can.
Many times we have between us rescued birds and animals. It seems the natural thing to do to help them to live out their lives. One of our Grandsons raised a young kestrel after a neighbouring farmer's wife found it lying on the ground, a long way from a possible nesting site. It slept in bed with him and he fed it round the clock until it became stronger. Later an aviary was built in the garden for 'Cully' and Jesse trained her to feed from his hand. Gradually with a creance he extended her flight from a perch to his outstretched arm and she would walk along it to his hand and select a bite. She loved climbing onto his shoulders and grooming his hair, ears and around his face. We have some wonderful photos of her including videos. Eventually, he had to prepare her to be released to live a free, wild life so he trained her to catch worms and look for food. She was attached to a very long leather thong and would circle overhead at quite a height but when he called her she would come down and settle on him. When he sat on the ground she ran up and down his legs, pulling at his laces or clothing. It was very sad when after several trial flights without a creance and sometimes staying away for a few days before coming back as he walked along calling her, she finally did not return! We all think we have seen her around her old haunts and even in the garden or on the fence at times. Her memory is very precious to us and we admire Jesse very much for what he did.
I have always loved watching birds and once made myself a hide from a large cardboard box with a slot to look through at the many birds that visited our garden at a previous house called Kestrel House. We also had a house called Martin House in which we lived for 19 years. Martins and swallows nested there year after year.
Now we live on the edge of a small market town but we manage to attract quite a few birds to our feeding station. One of our daughters lives in a farm house nearby and she is presently nursing a baby starling that has only one leg that is usable. It is uncertain how this came about as there is no injury and the little bird seems very lively.
Feel free to cut this down if you wish. I am sorry if I have written too much.
