The last day of summer?

I decided to make the best of what promised, in this part of the country, to be the last day of the Indian summer we have been enjoying. I took myself off early yesterday to Arne RSPB reserve, Dorset.

Some of the bird photographs I managed have been posted, but I thought I’d share my walk through the woodland.

As I went up a flight of steps entering the woods, I was greeted by this charming little fungus.

I entered the wood proper and this Sika stag was ‘claiming’ the pathway in the early sunshine. Some negotiation and a few poses later …

… and I was able to continue.

A little spot of light gardening was going on in the adjoining meadow.

… and a little more at the side of the path.

Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being watched?

The photo-opportunity taken, she let me carry on.

Before I left the woodland for the shore, I encountered this family group – a male calf, a female calf, and their mother. It was easy to imagine that the young male was reassuring his sister about my presence. Mother was completely unconcerned.

I’ve saved what I thought was the best until last. At the shore, I photographed a small sailing-boat. When I got home and downloaded the image, I spotted something at the bottom left. It’s a seal. One has been seen in Poole Harbour for the last year or so.
