RSPB Cymru Reserves Roadtrip (22nd-24th July 2011) Part One

By

Knowing that we were unlikely to be going abroad this year for holidays I convinced my girlfriend Jess to accompany me on a few days leave to do a three-day roadtrip around the majority of the major RSPB Cymru reserves. So it was bleary eyed that we set off early on the 22nd from Cardiff, and made for Lake Vyrnwy, in the foothills of the Berwyn mountains. Stunning views greated us on arrival:

The first reserve hide is situated in the carpark, and called Coed y Capel. The hide looks out on an adjacent woodland with several feeders to attract the local birdlife, and what a selection we saw just from this first hide of the trip:

However shortly after arrival it seemed that the weather was not quite with us! We headed for the next shelter, the Centenary Hide. However the weather really had taken a turn for the worse and there wasn’t much to see from this hide, so we shortly moved onto the Lakeside Hide. From here we saw a distant Heron, a family of Goosander and a couple of Great Crested Grebes.

Luckily the weather cleared slightly and we took the walk up the valley from the lake to Rhiwargor Falls:

The valley walk was gorgeous, the silence broken only by bird song and the odd Buzzard call from the cliffs above us.

Defeated by the clock we drove on up to North Wales to the Conwy reserve:

We were immediately struck not only by the stunning distant views of Snowdonia National Park, but by the rich estuary and wader bird population.

Curlew, Cormorant, Oystercatcher, Heron, Little Egret, Lapwing and Redshank were especially plentiful.

An excellent day was had by us both and we slept like logs that night to say the least! Stay tuned for part 2.

Next stop RSPB South Stack!
