Borrowpit Lake.

All quite today, not much going on.Decided to have a go at practicing fast shutter speeds in good light.
These are the results; Hope you like them.(taken at f9.0 tv 800)

Pleased with the Juvenile Grebe, been trying to get these for some time, but they keep diving when they see me!!

I like the "Tern" shots Rob and it shows your effectiveness with panning and speed.

Hi Robashfeild good shots, i like the one with the captured fish. It is not always easy to get a fast enougth shutter speed and maintain exsposure. Can you tell me what ISO you was using? its always interesting to me what works for other people, i then can go out and try for myself. I dont know if you have experimented with +&- exsposure compensation but i have been experimenting with this over the last few months and it really works well with birds in flight, you don't get so many siloettes (if i spelt it correctly?) or heavy shadows. Hope you don't mind the sugestion to try other settings. its not a negative on the images you posted just that i am learning the hard way and have binned many underexsposed images while relying on the camera to exspose for the skys and birds.

Thanks all...SB, the iso setting was at 200.AEB 1/4 stop(I think!) ! spot off middle!
I don't mind any suggestions,If it makes us better photographers, then all the better. After all,we can only learn if people educate us!!

Thanks robashfield you did very well at iso 200, the shutter speeds can really drop rapidly when using AV or your F stop if using TV a really big issue if light is an issue. I have the same frame of mind, if you don't ask or if people don't tell you struggle along and learn the long hard way. I used to belong to a local camera club but certain people where not into wildlife or liked to keep techniques a secret as competitions where the main focus of the club (not my thing). I am a more hands on learner and learn through trial and era.

My way of doing it Rob is to shoot in raw, shutter priority, iso 400-800,continuous drive and continual autofocus.I pick up the bird with the zoom wide, then zoom in and compose in the pan, achieve focus lock then fire a burst of 3-4 shots.I usually manage to get something using this method.Nothing wrong with your shots,by the way, they are very good.
