Help I spy a bird folk

By

I need some advise from someone who knows what they are talking about, This morning I had a phone call to say that my friend had found one of the swallows? to be laying on the floor just flapping about. They had phoned the RSPB and other resuce places and when they said it was a swallow or swift the reply was Sorry there is nothing we can do . I do realise that these birds feed on the wing and are very hard to look after if they are unwell. The thing is with this bird I think it is a youngster. Also I can not see anything wrong with its wings or body and the bird its self is very alert . But it can not fly. I have enclosed some photos for you to help me

I have a nice big safe pen which the bird is safe next to my chickens . I have given it water and its has lots of flys and things to feed on . II dont really no what else I can do HELP

I have just been looking at the photos and I think its left wing could have been damaged but it is still trying to use it if this is the case

Aw Donna, well done in trying to rescue this poor bird.
I will just say that I do not know what I am talking about in that I have never nursed such a bird lol :)) If it has food and water and your very safe aviary I am sure that you cannot do more to help it. It probably flew into something or a cat may have caught it ( the feathers look quite ruffled on its back).
All it may need is time and a chance to recuperate. You will have done more than enough to help it on its way. I hope someone else can advise you better :)

Donna...first thing is you are right the adults feed on the wing but the young need to be fed by the parents who then teach them to feed on the wing. This is very difficult...as you say does look very alert.Have seen that the left wing looks to be dragging but doesnt seem to be broken. A safe place as you are providing is good....is there any chance you could try to feed the flies to the little one with tweezers? Failing that if your friend knows where the swallows nest is could it be put back ? Sorry cannot be of more help Donna....the very best of luck..

Hi Aster i think it could have flown into something the bird to look at seems very undamaged. I have had it all day and it is still not showing any signs of flying. It has a safe house water and flys fingers crossed

Hi Jane thank you for your advise I dont think the feeding is the problem I think its the fact that the little bird wont fly or is trying to and just can not do it.

Just a thought Donna but some fledglings especially the last one hatched sometimes get squashed in the nest by their sibblings. I wonder if he was injured in this way ?

You may well be right Donna...in which case if he had a knock the wing may well be weakened. If thats the case a good rest and the TLC you are providing will hopefully help. Please keep us updated ..and the very best of luck again.. Oh...sorry to butt in by the way..Aster we posted at the same time..

I hope that this little fellow soon ends up on the wing. Let`s hope natural instinct will take over once he has recovered his strength.

I once thought about writing a book about a bird that was afraid of heights - perhaps he is that bird?
