Adventures in Birding

I recently popped into the Gilfach Reserve just up past Rhayader, and within ten minutes, had seen both a Lesser Redpoll on the feeders just outside the centre, and then a Spotted Flycatcher from the Otter Hide. However, because of the weather I had neglected to bring my camera! I consider the tragedy a lesson learned.

Having been so close to getting great shots of two amazing birds, and the combination of being trapped inside waiting on the repair man to come and fix the washing machine this morning with the sunshine blazing outside on my day off, I was itching to get out of the flat, so I took another trip to my new favourite haunt, Forest Farm. It’s only a short drive from where I live, but a drive none-the-less. Growing up as a Valleys boy I’ve always been used to having the countryside a short walk from my parent’s house, but living down Cardiff these days with my girlfriend I find myself having to hop in the car. However, Forest Farm really does surprise me as I’m always shocked at how much there is to see. This morning over a short hours walk I’ve seen plenty of different species, and snapped a few to show you.

I love this fluffy little Moorhen chick:

My quest to snap a decent picture of a Reed Warbler continues:

This Warbler was too far away for this to be a great shot, it’s lost some detail but I’m quite happy with it all the same.

At one point near the canal I happened to spot a male Bullfinch across the way so stood for a few minutes happily taking photos of it, until I realized that a little way from where I was standing a Buzzard had swooped down on the path in front of me. Shortly afterwards I realized that while I was photographing the Buzzard on the ground, it’s mate was keeping careful tabs on me from the branches above! This was all a few yards from where I was standing. Throughout my life I’ve seen hundreds of Buzzards and have almost become complacent about seeing them, but I have never been this close to a wild one and it’s really made my day.

Birding List of the Day: Heron, Bullfinch, Buzzard, Robin, Dunnock, Thrush, Mallard, Moorhen, Reed Warbler, Jay, Common Crow, Magpie, Chaffinch, Wren.

Cheers guys! Aye David it's a paid one thankfully! I'm on the Community Fundraising team in charge of the pin-badge scheme for Wales. I've got some annual leave booked for the weekend after next and will be doing a road-trip with my girlfriend to see the Mid and North Wales reserves so I'll have some more photos to make another blog entry after that.
