the disappearing fat ball.

decided to put a fatball on the ground under the cage feeder…knew the starlings would clear it but thought the little birds would at least get a taste.I was amazed that it had gone within minutes but had seen no starlings….Put another in later and was even more amazed when I saw a magpie squeeze into the cage (which is supposed to keep out the big birds) grab the fatball….drop it out of the cage…squeeze back through and flew off with the entire thing…..Sadly no camera to hand….think I will ask the RSPB for a refund on the cage…lol

Cunning and devious devils these Magpie.

btw I've noticed 'our' magpies seem to sharpen their beaks everytime they visit us. Land on top of a fence and click the rail with both sides of their beak before flying on to the food. Is this standard ?

Where there`s a will there`s a way or should we say bird? I`ve noticed birds clicking their beaks on fencing and tree branches. Perhaps to clean as well?
Food is expensive - The Range ran out of loose and so I had to buy bagged,. Mind you I got a bargain there it cost me an extra 50p for another 2kg.
I wish you`d got those shots too.

Hi Littlewren
Same here regarding the volume of food they are all going through...as you say its relentless! Funnily enough a similare thing happened with fat balls here...only the culprits were a couple of rooks !! Talk about opportunists!! They dropped them onto the ground and pecked at them to break the fat balls up..then flew off with bulging beaksful...lol.Like you no pics this time though...
Agree about the beak wiping too...:o)

We seem to be constantly filling the feeders. Garden full of fledglings. Haven't put out fatballs as it attracts a big mob of starlings who keep the other birds away.

The starlings seemed to have disappeared from our garden...its the woodpigeons, collared doves, and jackdaws at the moment...luckily a tap on the window usually chases them....well for a while...they circle around a few times and come back lol
