Cuckoos

By

We used to hear cuckoos every year but hadn’t heard any for about ten years – then about two weeks ago we heard the first call and have heard it most days since. Welcome back.

Not heard a cuckoo for years either Wagger......glad to hear they have returned in your neck of the woods.Having flown in from Africa, perhaps a trip "up North" is just a journey too far !

Aye as Jane says we miss out on some of the summer migrants we have to wait for the tougher ones to visit us in winter , when the North seems more appealing than Scandinavia or Siberia lol.

We have heard cuckoo song every year for about 5 years here in Surrey. It goes on for several weeks at nesting time, from the surrounding woods and farmland. What are the host birds likely to be?

Hi Woodlyme...welcome to Ispyabird....as regards your comment to Peter and Ajay....the site is only a few weeks old...but gaining momentum all the time.Hope you enjoy it !
Main hosts of cuckoos tend to be reed warblers and dunnocks. We havent heard a cuckoo here for years (N.Yorks )

curious facts about cuckoos,
cuckoos eat caterpillars whose hairs make them quite inedible to other birds.they can do this because they have stomach linings which can be discarded and replaced with new ones whenever too many hairs accumulate in their stomach.
