Cairngorm National Park

Hi all,
Do any of you live near Cairngorm N.P.? I have booked a weekend away with friends & the wife, at Highlander Hotel, via a local community centre.
Would appreciate a few tips on places to go or what kind of wildlife to expect? Not going until October(Anniversary treat for the wife! lol) Let me know either via the blog or P.M.
Many thanks
Rob

It's a shame that you won't be going until October, Rob, as you will miss the Ospreys at RSPB Loch Garten Reserve, but still worth dropping into.

The Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie will let you see wildcat, capercaillie and red squirrel amongst many others, although you may be lucky enough to spot red squirrels anywhere in the conifer woods, when out and about.

You could also take the funicular railway trip up Cairn Gorm mountain to the viewpoint and cafe-restaurant for the incredible views to be had on a clear day.

Too many walks to mention any one in particular. The area is only 1 and a half hour's drive for me, but I do like to go there for a few days occasionally with my kids. They love it, too.

Yes, Lol, Jane! :-))

Forgot to mention RSPB Insh Marshes, Rob, which is only 4 miles from where you will be staying in Newtonmore. This is regarded as one of the most important wetland sites in Europe. What you may see in October might be interesting, as there may still be some summer visitors, or some early winter arrivals. Best check out the reserve on the RSPB website.http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/i/inshmarshes/index.aspx

Lol. Rob! You don't say whether you are going by coach or car, which will affect how you can get about. Two more links to wildlife in general in the area, just for some insight:-
