Black Tailed or Bar Tailed

What is the difference between the two please. I have looked at so many pics to try to ID and cannot. here are some pics. One is a different colour but in the books this varies.
Are they male and female or different birds

Living close to Langstone Harbour these two are frequent visitors.The Black Tailed has a straight bill and a white bar in the wing in flight,the Bar Tailed has a slightly upturned bill and has no white bar in the wing.Both in winter are grey and in breeding plumage are reddish on the back and breast.Look under B at the bottom of the page I have some shots of them.Eric

Thank you Eric - so have I got winter and summer plummage or different birds. The beaks seem straight cannot see a bar except perhaps the one in flight.

Hi Mike, Yes same birds, the last photo in this blog you might be able to see a slight trace of the reddish plumage in the upper chest.If you are fortunate to get some real close ups of the tails you will see the black or the bars.
