Day tripper for little Dipper

For sometime now Jane and I have known the location of Kingfishers and Dippers and regularly visit a remote stretch of the River Derwent even in the depths of winter ..

Today we were determined to find their exact location no joy with the Kingfishers but a pair of Dippers flew up and downstream ..could really do with a camera each as they seemed to land nearest the one of us without it !

Jane with binoculars saying there it is by the rock .. a helpful description in a stream full of them.A treecreeper appeared whilst Jane had the camera quick Jane where ? in the tree again great help in a wood .

Eventually I ventured out to a small island mid stream and lay in long grass .. so glad of its remote situation .

Then ..

Suddenly it seemed to be almost tolerating my presence .. no longer flying off it began dipping close by.

A pair began feeding on either side of the bank and quickly found juicy grubs which they werent eating ..

Where were they taking them ? It took a while for us to realise that they were not flying under the bridge to go upstream but were nesting on a ledge directly under it.

The domed nest is quite large and built fresh each year .. you can see last years nest close by.

Apologies for the quality of some of these final images it was so dark under the bridge and too far for flash to be effective.
The bright sunshine did little to help despite my efforts to compensate with exposure .. think you can make out Dipper at the nest and hopefully a return visit will find them with fledglings when the pressure of feeding overcomes any intrusion.

Can only end by saying we saw a lot better than photos suggest and a great way to spend the day.

Thanks LW .. a thrill to see but just couldnt get exposure right as sun was behind bridge so pointing into it .. too light too dark .. hopefully knowing where they hang out will help when they fledge.

Great pics, Bb, and got really caught up in the excitement of what you saw. I really enjoy spotting these birds, and a mental pic of you lying in that grass, midstream, made me smile. :-))

Thanks FP ..could spend hours watching them ( and did ! ) such dramatic little birds incredible how they search for food and how successful they are in finding grubs and flies oh for an underwater camera lol

Thanks David been a long time trying to catch a decent photo of these birds and finding the nest site means that I m likely to be going a lot more often.

Next challenge will be to try and sort exposure as attempts to lighten bleach out any detail it really is very dark under the bridge and access is not easy .. perhaps need one of LWs inflatable hides to float downstream in ..

Hopefully will witness young being fed as they fledge they tend to tuck into undergrowth on riverbanks so knowing they are not nesting there will alert me to their position.

Thanks Gill went to catch up yesterday and someone had the bright idea of planning a treasure hunt for young children along the river and over the bridge where they nest !

Should be thankful wasnt lying in the long grass then .. with parents and grandparents thinking I was waiting to pounce on their little darlings ...
