Should have gone to specsavers!!

By

We were woken early yesterday morning by the sound of machine gun fire downstairs. As the dog was barking loudly I thought I had better investigate. The noise was comming from the kitchen. It apeared to be the boiler making the deafening noise. The thought of large plumbing bills sprang to mind ,till I realised it was not even switched on, my wife suggested it might be a bird trapped in the chimney, not possible I said there`s a guard on the top.Anyway I went outside looked up at the boiler vent on the roof, there was a greater spotted woodpecker merrily pecking away at the vent. Do you think he had mistaken it for a tree? lol. Do woodpeckers talk to each other this way like jungle drums? I thought they were looking for food when pecking at trees.

Do you have a picture to aid identification Ron? Might it have been a Greater Spotted Metalpecker? The jungle drums report that they are becoming more common.

Or a Great Potterton Woodpecker?
In Spring they drum on objects that will resonate well at the edge of their territory and have been seen (heard!) to use telegraph poles and lampposts. (They have a shock-absorbent brain case!).

Thanks chaps for the comments & info, I did think by the colours it might be a head banging Newcastle supporter who thought the vent was a giant brown ale & peanut feeder.:o]]
