RSPB Reserve Fairburn Ings , Yorkshire.

Have intended to visit many times as we drive up and down A1 and pass the large cooling towers at Ferrybridge that dominate the landscape for miles around.

The series of lakes at Fairburn were formed from old coal mining works and are bordered by the River Aire north of Leeds.

As yesterday ( Thurs ) was the warmest day we d had since early November last year we took the opportunity to drive the 70 miles for a day out.

Obviously the area closest to the car park and visitor centre was the busiest ..

Various hides are located around the lakes some were very popular and being half term the children were less than patient demanding loudly to know why they couldnt see a kingfisher ..

We did spot a green woodpecker but alas too far for a clear photo.

The further from the main site the fewer and a series of small islands attract a wide variety of ducks and waders .. oh for a long lens on these occassions .

Shelduck , teal , goldeneye , pochard , oystercatcher , lapwing , ..

All was not lost though .. a group of long tailed tits landed on branches near the hide.

We returned to the main car park and watched the antics of gulls ..

Love the look of astonishment of this ones face as bread drops from the sky .. it never hit the water , of course !

Others really couldnt be bothered.

Like this Tufted duck ..

This Mallard .. nice to see one that hadnt been genetically ‘modified’..

and these cute Aylesbury ducks.

All in all a great day .. highly recommended , we plan to return as Bearded tits and Marsh harriers have been recorded in the extensive reed beds.Of course pot luck whats seen .. or not .. kinda hoping William and Kate have a great day the weathers wonderful and millions are glued to their tv sets .. think our plans for the extra BH may be somewhat different !

Jane, that is sooooo spookie. I have just been googling and browsing for Marsh/Willow Tit images and Fairburn Ings showed up with suitable pics. Of course, few were as good as your pictures.

Last time I came down the A1 we stayed overnight at Tadcaster (Premier Inn) and then followed the A162 via Sherburn in Elmet down to Ferrybridge. The cooling condensation on a risp sunny morning made a fantastic site from several miles away.

I feel another northwards trip in site.

Thank you so much Littlewren. You should have seen the children throwing bread as high as they could and then laughing when they caught it ! Blue skies a lovely memory today as back to grey and drizzle ! Lol
Thanks Janette..the gulls were the stars of the show !! Lol

So glad you got there, folks! Yes, lovely to see a non-GM duck, and loved seeing the long-tailed tits, too. Shame on the kingfisher for not making a personal appearance for the children. Love the shot of the gull with the bread in mid air!! :-))
