Tawny Owl

By

Our garden backs onto open fields and its become a part of our fortunate lives to hear owls hooting in the night. Its around 18 months ago since my husband built an owl box, which he fixed in the branches of an ash tree on our garden boundary.

We were beginning to lose hope that we would ever get a Tawny to nest but on Sun 9.5.10 we were presently surprised to see an owl fly from the box and after ‘technically’ strapping a small camcorder to a pole to look into the nest it not only revealed the owl was in there but also 2 eggs.

We will be keeping well away from the nest site now but we’ll be looking out for any developments from a distance. The box faces away from the garden so progress is not easy to follow.

I’ll keep you posted. Dawn

I'm also lucky enough to hear owls during the night but I've never seen them! I had to laugh at your 'camera on a pole' technique - well done. Where there's a will, there's a way!

Thanks everyone for your comments.
Memphis: We darent look into the box again.
Someone told me when they had a Tawny nesting the eggs hatched on 1st June, so maybe not long now.
Jane: Fancy one flying over your head - the thing with owls is they fly silently, dont they.
I must do some research so I know when the babies are likely to appear.

Read about a rescued owl that Les Stocker looked after once...he called it old "Hush-Wing "...think that describes them to a T !!

Very cool :o) On TV at the weekend someone had spent 18 months designing and building a suitable nest on a river bank for kingfishers - all set with cameras to watch them raise a family. After so long, pair eventually moved in but then left after just a week.

Are these the first owls you've had, or just the first tawny owls?

Hmm, just had a quick google for the types of owl in the UK and it looks like you'd be very lucky to have another type!

Hi Peter. I think the only owls around here are Tawny's and no, we've never had them nesting before until this year. I'm still amazed they found the box. We've heard their calls in the night for years. If all goes well, I'm hoping they'll return another year. I believe they are territorial so I feel even luckier they chose our site.
We tried a nest box for the kingfisher on the bank of our brook but no luck with that yet.

This is very exciting, Dawn. Looking forward to any progress reports. We live next to our town park, and also hear owls at night. One night, I was standing at the back door, and an owl suddenly landed on my shed roof. Not sure who got the biggest startle - me, or the bird, when it realised I was there.

Hi David :-)
Lucky you, seeing the owl. I never see them flying around. I will report on progress but to be honest, in the daytime I look up to the box and all is quiet and I'm giving the area a wide berth so as not to disturb them. When/If the babies appear outside the box on the branches, I Spy, will be the first to know.

I've only ever seen 4 out and about at night in my life, Dawn, but I remember one crashing into our lounge window in broad daylight when I was a child. Don't know why it was out and about in the early afternoon. Like other birds, it must have been confused by the windows at both front and rear of the lounge, thinking that it was a clear flight path. :-((

Fingers and toes all crossed here for you! :-))

All the Best for your Mallard and brood, Ray and Jane - I hope that you can give us a blog update. :-))
