Curlews

By

Today has been rather foggy, and breezy, but managed to get down to a nearby shoreline, to watch the curlews, which feed here in winter. Here are some of my pics :-

I hope that I can get some clearer shots in the wintry daylight – will persevere! :-)

David I am browsing on my mobile but the pics still look pretty good. Wish I wish I had taken them. Good luck with the weather; it's pouring down here.

Thanks, folks! Woke up this morning to pouring....snow (again! Aaargh!. Too wet to lie, though, Thank Goodness. Made yesterday feel, and look like, summer, lol! Am glad to get out and about at every dry, no matter how dull, opportunity.

Not sure that we get whimbrels here, Bb. Have never read about any being spotted. Think that they can be seen, in season, farther north. If they have any snse, they will all still be down in warmer Africa. :-)

Oh lovely David...look forward to seeing them. Our goldfinches are eating us out of house and home. They just love sunflower hearts...more than niger seed . This year am hoping to grow huge sunflowers in the hope they will feed on the seeds and save us a bit of money !!

I have found this , too, this last year in my friends' garden. We always grow sunflowers!!! We oven dry the seeds, and eat ourselves (lovely smell), and put out majority for the birds. If we have a surplus, as usually do, will know where to send it! X

Always sow in trays, Jane. When I had a greenhouse, would sow a bit earlier, late March (they germinate quickly). Nowadays, start off in trays on a south-facing windowsill in late April, for planting out approx 4 weeks later, after frost danger over. The large seedheads can be left on the stalks, or cut and placed, face up, on birdtables, depending on who you want to feed - Do try drying some for yourselves, add to bread mix, etc! :-))
