Deserted bird table

By

I’d noticed that my bird table was being deserted on quite a regular basis and couldn’t understand it. Would have made more sense if it was a total desertion but they kept coming back! Then saw the reason – perched on the pergola was a lovely (well, in one sense) sparrowhawk.

Any tips for dissuading it?

a difficult one Wagger....I think most of us that feed the birds regularly have this visitor......I myself have sometimes 3 visits a day ....I have come to accept that the sparrowhawk needs to survive too but hubby will go out and chase it off. Don't know if anyone has a foolproof idea.....good luck whatever happens.....If you click on S at the bottom of the page and go to sparrowhawk you will see many photos of this lovely bird

Agree with LW it is difficult the only way to deter would be to forego a bird table and use those globe squirrel proof bird feeders but this would prevent many ground feeding birds from using it.

If not done so already ensure your bird table is an open position as possible and move it every couple of months. If left in same position they learn a flight path to strike ..

Thanks for that, Bb - bird table is in an open position and fortunately has good cover quite nearby - there was a race for an ivy-clad post yesterday which the blue tit won! Hurrah!!! Just posting a couple of photos of the culprit which I got yesterday.

Have become pragmatic now Wagger and hope that the sparrowhawk takes a bigger bird. If not will return for several smaller ones..more heart breaking to see.....
