FAT CAKES.......WELL FAT THINGS!!

Having read articles regarding the problems with birds getting caught in feeders and the quality of GC fat balls I decided to make some fat balls myself well more fat shapes really !!….So I mixed together some good bird seed with chopped mixed fruit, trifle sponges, apple and some old cheddar with a good amount of lard, was surprised how easy it was, so cold in our kitchen it was setting as I mixed it…….problem was I did not have anything to hang them in…..so I looked in our odds and sods drawer and came up with the ideas shown below, now as they say the proof of the pudding!!!……..

As you can see from the photos, all I have used is thin wire, shoelace, plant sticks, good French wine corks (a must) lol ice- cream sticks, just hope I have some takers !!

Hi Dottydaisy...great to see you perched here ! I just love your fat balls....much more goodness in these than the shop bought ones I think ! Its minus 6 here and been snowing all day...birds are eating for England !! Made up a big fat dish similar to yours for the flock of starlings.Just realised I have an out of date pack of trifle sponges in the cepboard so thanks for the tip...they will go in the next lot !!! Love the lolly sticks for perches too :o)

Hi Jane, not been on as I did not have any birdy stuff to contribute, but the garden is now heaving with them, wish I could get some decent pics.
Minus 6 !! oh dear poor you, it is very cold here and it is trying to snow, have put lots of feed out and so lovely to get the finches in the garden isn't it? glad you liked my wacky ideas.

Yes,we are lucky to have lots of goldfinches Dd...spent most of today clearing patches of snow for the sparrows and chaffinches to feed.As fast as it was cleared more snow covered it.Glad your garden is full of birds..they know where they will be looked after..

Ingenious hanging ideas ... we keep these items as we know they'll come in handy one day! My first attempt at making these in polystyrene cups was not too successful ... I put them in the fridge and not the freezer! Lesson learnt now though. One 5 minute snow flurry earlier ... so sorry to hear you have so much of the stuff, Jane.

Doesn't this work out expensive? I mean having to drink all that French wine just for the corks!

Lol DD it had risen to minus 6 by time Jane got up ..these are a lovely idea and as you say probably more beneficial than GC ones .Love the lollilop perches.

I tried to insert wire to hang them but birds decided to peck from top and my homemades dropped off ..

Interestingly the GC ones get left once my homemade ones are out but then despite my lack of cooking ability they are packed with allsorts.

Lol Ken ..but the saving on bird food means more wine ..

Well after all that work.....the birds wont look at them, would you believe it? had to break some of them up and put them on the ground (perhaps they were scared of them?) we had a robin and a blackbird eat a fair bit of it, so have sent for a fat ball feeder.

Great idea, Dd!!!! I've tried making them in plastic drinks cups before, and didn't hold their shape. Have since tried your version, especially with the corks. Only trouble is, by the time I've got rid of the wine, can't remember where I put them!!! Ungrateful, hic, little, hic! b***** hic! .....birds!
