first goldcrest

just walked down the road to go to the shop and as i glanced up i was aware of something small hopping and flitting around the tree above me, too small for a blue tit and flitted around more than they do, didnt have that cheeky little tail that the wren has [which i love] but it had a very distinct eye and some gold on it somewhere, tried to get a photo but dont think it has worked. looked it up on the RSPB site and i think it was a goldcrest! made my day ~ lovely little bird.

be nice if they came to the garden but not so far ~ not sure what they like to eat ~ dont they sell that thistle down stuff for them?

Often the way ST think most bird watchers have tales of those rare occasions when a camera never to hand and wonderful sights present themselves.

Mine would be of a dipper that emerged on bank opposite me by a small stream probably no more than six feet away ..then from the bank came its 2 young to be fed will I ever be so lucky again ? of course no camera !

As regards feeding them .. they are very much woodland birds they actually eat insects and spiders and winter has to be harsh indeed to tempt them to bird feeders .Sadly due to this and their size harsh winters have a dramatic effect on their survival rates.
