Today's Blessing

Just back from my long doggy walk. It was lovely when we set out, but cold. By the time we were on our last quarter mile it had clouded over and was looking very threatening. On the last leg we passed the local playing field which has a line of Prunus and Sorbus at it’s border. There in the trees I had to stop and count them….there were about 60!! I’ve never seen one in my life before today….Waxwings…with their beautiful trilling song, so gentle. They were feasting on Rowan berries. The weather must surely be very bad on the continent! What a pity I didn’t have my camera with me!

There really were...about...I couldn't count them all, so I counted 20 and that was about one third of the flock.

That must have been a brilliant sight Karen.Never seen one either but have heard about them feeding in flocks as you describe.Last winter had Fieldfares in the garden for the first time, eating the last of the apple windfalls.Didnt go down too well with the resident blackbirds though ! Lol

I've seen fieldfares every hard winter. They come into the garden in flocks and you see them in the parks and fields also. They are lovely too, but the waxwings are very distinctive with their yellow flashes and the little tuft at the back of the head.

Saw them again today....even more of them this time...they must be having a highland gathering!! Still no photo as I was walking the dog again and didn't think I would see them. Perhaps tomorrow. Trouble is the camera doesn't do long distances.....I really need a better one if I'm going to take pics of birds.

Yes, thanks everyone. I saw them again yesterday and today and yesterday there were huge amounts of them. I didn't count, but certainly a lot more than sixty! Today I heard them but there were only a few and i only caught a glimpse as they were quite high up in a taller tree. The trees in the park are all bare now! They will be moving on!
