Ospreys at Loch DOON

Our local newspaper has reported the sighting of an osprey at Loch Doon which is situated at the edge of the Galloway forest. This is the first sighting in 100 years .Forest rangers have built a feeding platform and have found fish bones andscales ,so its hunting and feeding on the loch.they are going to build two more feeding platforms where the public can use hides and get a better view.I live only 10 miles from the loch and hope to get up to the loch as soon as the weather allows .

I am surprised, too, like Janette, that any ospreys still to be seen here, but may be a mix of good and bad weather delaying migration. Am thinking that, in fact, your osprey is making a stop-over on its route to Africa, as many take a route south-west, then over Ireland, before heading over Bay of Biscay, Spanish and Portuguese coast, etc., down to W Africa. But, knowing those Rangers, am sure that they are making plans for ospreys to consider residing here next year - GREAT NEWS!!! :-)))

Wonderful news as suggests range is expanding which can only be a good thing .. sure you must be right David re next year , dont they take a while to reach breeding maturity ?

I was thinking the same as David maybe your osprey is heading south, and coming down for far north ....Three year untill they are mature enough to breed Bonkers .....

You're right, of course, Janette - 3 years, as far as I've always known. It would be great to have them feel so welcome at Loch Doon, too, and, as you say, Bb, another possible future breeding site for those lovely birds, perhaps with controllled visitor access. :-)))

spoke to my ranger friend today,it was kept quiet from the local media.there was a male and a female on the loch.not as was reported one male ,they did leave for warmer climes mid sept.one feeding station completed .its at the far side of the loch inaccsesible by car, 4x4s needed. It can be seen from the roadside of the loch so may get some shots of the platform.its a tall pine with the bark stripped of it and a landing platform on top.My friend was watching some wildlife on the loch when he spotted a small orange thing climbing up the pine.He put his spotting binocs.on it and saw a person climbing up the pine .He called the local bobbies who came up to the loch quite quickly.they all pilled into my friends 4x4 and shot of round the loch to the tree .The intruder was ordered down .It turned out it was one of guys who built the feeding platform for the forestry commision and was up checking it all was ok.Its the way we do things in Scotland ha ha.Best of all Ive got a hot line to the arrivals if they appear next year.Fingers crossed.
