Another Breath of Fresh Air!

By

Isn’t it exciting to have a wonderful new venue to drop into? And one dedicated to our amazing feathered friends.

With the arrival of marvellous weather, at last, I’m looking forward to being out in the great outdoors even more often now, armed with camera, notepad and birdbooks.

“Ispy” member Arlene sent us this wonderful book last year. I find it invaluable.

Of course, you won’t find these birds on the pages of this book………

The famous Flamingoes of Kensington

These beautiful birds, I can assure you, are very real, and not plastic ornaments.

Much closer to home, in my garden, actually, I’m enjoying the antics of sparrows and tits, who are raiding my hessian potato sacks for nest material. They show some remarkable strength, as they tug and pull the fibres apart, but I do hope they leave some for my own use.

This is the evidence – now, all I have to do is catch them in the act with my camera!

_Happy Birdwatching! _:-)

:-)) Bb.

Thought you were going to say that I'm always full of something else! :-D

In the early '80s, I worked on and off in an Environmental Studies Centre, aimed primarily at schools, colleges and nurseries. We had a large display area, had monthly "themed" open days in summer, acted as field guides on trips, gave slide show talks to clubs and societies, etc. We also wrote and published our own info booklets. One of my areas of interest were the islands in the Forth (political/maritime history, and the wildlife - mainly birds). Now you know the origins of my interests/"titbits" of info! :-D))

Have just dug out the booklets I wrote! The Bass Rock one was written in 1985, so I think it is time for an update! :-))

Certainly a wonderful area to study David and what a location.Saw a programme recently whereby someone had made many attempts to visit Bass rock but kept being beaten back by the changeable weather.

Yes it would be interesting to see what changes you have noticed since 1985.

The weather is the biggest hurdle, Bb. Having booked a trip, you then are advised to 'phone on the morning of the day of your trip to check if it is on. Even a stiff breeze can make the sea around the island too dangerous.

Will try to :-)

On the way home from work this evening, I stopped off at the ticket office for another boat trip to another island - Inchcolm. This is a far more accessible place, with a beautifully-preserved abbey, but also a large gull colony. I've seen just how ferocious they can be if you get too close to their nests. :-)
