Missed opportunities!

Evening fellow bird lovers! I thought I would share my despair with you all! during my usual hourly walk with my dog,I decided not to take my camera….I know..I know stupid decision! As I walked down to the lakes,I was stopped in my tracks by 2 mother ducks with 7 chicks crossing the road in single file. What a picture,I thought! missed that one.feeling miffed ,I continue my walk down to the lakes, where I spot one of the young swans, which pleased me,because they had all disappeared last week.Whilst standing watching the swan having a wash,I spied a heron, hiding in the rushes.I decided to see how close I could get, knowing that it would not be far, cause they always fly away before you get close…right? WRONG! I got right up to within a yard of him,he knew I was there, but did not move.Another photo chance gone!! By now I am seething, why did I leave my camera at home? I usually take it,even when it is raining.I always carry doggy poo bags with me,they make excellent camera covers! So continuing my walk,I track down to the end of the lake, then over the bridge to make my way back home.As i get onto the bridge,I look down, and what do I see…..The very same heron, fishing! and he had got a fish in his mouth!! I am now thinking, someone up there doesn’t like me!Thats 3 photo shots I’ve missed.Really despondant now,I carry on home, only for a site to catch my eye…Not my fave animal, but a water rat swimming across the lake with a baby on its back,a site I have never witnessed, and might never again!! PLEASE PLEASE tell me you have ALL suffered like me…if only to make me feel better!! lol look forward to reading your tales of woe!

I ve ticked I like as you made me laugh so much dispair yes funny how nature works, its always the way, many times Ive gone into the garden and all the birds sit on the fence camera in the house, go to get it they ve gone, I just laugh to think how dumb am I not to take the camera with me even though Im hanging out washing or planting seeds.

Oh Rob lol how long a list would you like ? Dippers with young on a bank opposite just feet away? Perhaps an Otter ..or seeing a Dunnock feed a cuckoo fledgling .. you return to the spot but the same opportunity never seems to present itself.

I could post dozens of pics of a branch I know a kingfisher returns to and dives to feed just cannot get close enough ..perhaps the saddest was finding a reed warblers nest with young in and watching it cling on reed stems to feed them returned a few days later to find gangs of fishermen clearing the spot to cast their lines from !

They looked at me as if completely erm ..bonkers to be upset by what they had done.

Yep been there many a time, my bottom greenhouse is quite close to an apple tree where I have a couple of feeders and the lost opportunities especially in the springtime you would think I`d learn ,you`re right tho, cos if I take my camera the birds don`t come....
Bb I think I`d have hung around to play duck and drake across their fishing lines.........

Oh Rob...think we have all been there and done that ..Lol. Once not so long ago went for a walk in our local woods...armed with the camera as usual. After a while came across a clearing...and heard "Tap tap tap"...Yes you guessed...up above was the Great spotted woodpecker methodically working round the tree.Carefully raised camera and focussed...pressed button..Nothing. The battery was sitting on charge where I had left it in the front room !! Grrr !
Sorry you missed the water rat and baby..as you say probably once in a lifetime sight !

Your blog made me laugh but I do feel for you. I am still kicking myself for not carrying a camera with me when I began taking long walks in our nearby woods - not such unusual sightings as yours but still frustrating :(
Thanks for the tip re: poo bags - I carry them always!

Am getting better, Rob! I always have batteries in the camera now, and spares in the car. Still to get to grips with putting the spares in my pocket before leaving the car, however!!! nothing worse than having walked part of the way round a large lake, run out of power, then remember that I left the spares in the glove compartment half an hour ago!!!
